MAR’s marine science internship program at the Zavora Marine Lab was developed to provide a world-class opportunity for science students and dedicated conservationists to assist with and receive training in marine research and conservation.
Sustainability
Zavora is located in a remote African village where fishing and farming is the only form of livelihood. MAR is committed to being an effective and sustainable partner within the Zavora Bay community. We are working with the local fishermen to secure their future as well as the future of our marine ecosystems.
What’s Included
Accommodation, food, research dives, dive gear, airport transfers, theoretical and practical training.
What’s Not Included
Flights, visas, internet (we recommend interns getting a local SIM card upon arrival).
Trip Itinerary
We require that volunteers participate in our program for a minimum of 2 weeks, however we recommend coming for one month (or more) to get the full experience.
Weeks 1-2: Interns will attend a series of lectures focusing on the projects they will be participating in (manta rays, humpback whales, nudibranchs, seahorses, sharks, fish). They will then go out into the field to receive practical training on how to safely and efficiently collect data for each of the projects. Scuba diving/data collection generally takes place in the morning and lectures in the afternoon.
Weeks 3-4+: Once interns have received the appropriate training, they will start collecting data for our database. In the mornings, interns will either be scuba diving, snorkeling, or preforming land-based humpback whale surveys. In the afternoons they will input the data into the database back at the lab.
Interns will get 1-2 days off per week to explore the area or just relax in a hammock or at the beach.
Program And Price
2 weeks: $1850 USD, 1 month: $2600 USD. Inquire for longer-term packages and additional dive courses.
